Overview:
Wines of South Africa is launching a global competition to find the Wines of South Africa Sommelier of 2013. There are two rounds to the competition, the country round and the final, held in Cape Town. The country rounds will be held in 11 markets, covering key and emerging export markets for South African wines.
The UK round will be held on 8th July 2013 at South Africa House, Trafalgar Square, London, WC2N 5DP. The doors will be open from 11.00 to 19.30. The winner of the UK round of the competition will travel to South Africa from 5th – 13th October.
UK competition outline:
Entrants can arrive at any time during the day; allow at least an hour and a half for the assessment. Stage one: there will be a tasting of on-trade exclusive wines. Free-pour tasting. For the competition entrants will be asked to submit three tasting notes with food recommendations. Entrants can, at leisure, taste all the wine available. Three wines will also be tasted blind.
Stage two: a multiple choice questionnaire with 20 questions about the South African wine industry including history, wines, and varieties.
Stage three: a short interview with two experts to discuss how South Africa can feature on a wine list, styles and varieties that work in the on-trade and how you would bring South Africa to new customers.
There are 60 Wines to taste throughout the day, and you DON’T need to enter the competition to try them.
All attendees are free to taste more wines in their own time during the day.
Final in South Africa outline:
There will be a judging panel of 3 international and 4 South African judges.
The winner from each country will come to South Africa for a week, to visit the winelands, taste regions and varieties, eat at leading winelands restaurants and enjoy authentic South African cuisine.
The final competition will take place the day before departure. It will incorporate a theoretical questionnaire which will cover areas that have been explored over the week, a blind tasting of six wines (all of which will have been tasted over the week) and a final, on stage, for the three sommeliers with the highest scores. This will be a role play situation, with a live restaurant set up.
