UK Sommelier of the Year Competition Final 2009

Exciting final sees Laura Rhys from Hotel TerraVina, Southampton, win prestigious title

Laura Rhys, 27, from Hotel TerraVina, Southampton, was announced last night as the 2009 UK Sommelier of the Year, following a tense final held at the Tate Modern in London. This prestigious competition, organised by the Academy of Food & Wine and sponsored by Champagnes Piper-Heidsieck & Charles Heidsieck, saw the country’s best sommeliers competing for the title under the scrutiny of a high-profile panel of judges.

“The standard of this year’s competition was unbelievable. To have the UK’s top 15 sommeliers demonstrating such high levels of expertise under such nerve-racking conditions was thrilling,” commented Christian Holthausen, International House Communications Director, Champagnes Piper-Heidsieck & Charles Heidsieck, distributed in the UK by First Drinks Brands Ltd.

Professional Connoisseur Series

An exciting opportunity for you to position your product to a high profile and influential “on-trade” audience is waiting for you!

As I'm sure you are aware the Academy of Food & Wine is the not for profit professional body for Sommeliers, Waiters and Bar Assistants in the UK and is affiliated to the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI). Over the years we have gained a reputation for running professional, craft & product focussed training for our members.

We are now launching the first dates for the Autumn season of our “Professional Connoisseur” series which are affordable and accessible bite size sessions which we believe will be more beneficial to yourself the sponsor and more appealing (time wise) to the delegate. Where else could you target the “on -trade” so successfully, in volume, with ease and at such a reasonable cost?   Suppliers and companies such as yours often tell us they can’t get to the “on-trade” en masse.   Well, now you can, in terms of both quality and quantity.

As a sponsor you will also benefit from:
• Mentions in the mailshot about the series to between 250-500 establishments to attract delegates from within a 20-mile radius of the venue.
• Acknowledgement at the event.
• The opportunity to present to 30 to 50 'on-trade' delegates.
• A full delegate list, complete with names, addresses and telephone numbers for follow-up marketing activity.
• The opportunity to feature in Front of House, the Academy's web-based magazine to 6000 named readers from across our industry (published quarterly). Or acknowledgement in Table Service the Academy’s e-zine which goes out to over 3000 members.
• Feature in the Events Diary located on the Academy’s web-site- www.acfws.org

Please contact Helen on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for a location list detailing the venues and dates we can offer you, along with a price list which includes some topic ideas. Alternatively please let us know if you have another idea for your sponsored niche. The more diverse the better!

All you need to do is select a Monday (as this is when the "on-trade" are most available) and supply your product, an educator and sales literature and we will organise the venue, the marketing of the event and the provision of the delegates.

I look forward to hearing from you, either by fax 020 8661 4647 or by email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
